Northern Lights Forecast for Alta
How to read the northern lights forecast for Alta on Yr: activity, cloud cover, the 30 to 90 minute nowcast, what Kp means this far north, and the aurora cameras nearby.
The forecast to read is Yr, the weather service run by NRK and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. For Alta it shows the aurora activity and the cloud cover up to three days ahead, with images from aurora cameras nearby. Read the clouds first: Yr’s own advice is that the best conditions are a dark, clear sky without clouds.
The calendar above is Amazing Aurora’s campfire tour from Alta, from US$128 a person (checked November 2026), whose guides chase the clearest sky with real-time tracking.
What Yr shows for Alta
| Part | What it shows | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Aurora activity | A level from no activity to very high, for now and the next three days | Computed for Alta itself, from the Kp and the threshold for its latitude |
| Cloud cover | The forecast cloud for the place and hour | The deciding number: a clear sky beats a high activity level under cloud |
| Nowcast | A percentage 30 to 90 minutes ahead, from the solar wind | The “is it happening now” number; the Yr app can send a push alert above 30% |
| Aurora cameras nearby | Recent images from cameras around the region, with their distance | A live check before you drive out |
Yr’s aurora forecast and its help page, read November 2026.
Yr’s help page explains the nowcast: a short-term forecast of where and how strong the aurora will be, from 0 to 100%, 30 to 90 minutes ahead, the time the solar wind takes to travel from the observation point to Earth. It links to the US Space Weather Prediction Center for the details.
What Kp means in Alta
The Kp index runs from 0 to 9. The US Space Weather Prediction Center defines it from the disturbance of the Earth’s magnetic field over three-hour intervals, averaged over 13 observatories: 1 is calm, and 5 or more is a geomagnetic storm. Yr adds that the higher the Kp, the further towards the equator the aurora can be seen, and it combines the Kp with your geomagnetic latitude. Its table sets a threshold per band of geomagnetic latitude, from Kp 0 for 66 to 74 degrees up to Kp 9 for 48 to 50, and its activity level for a place is built from how far the Kp sits above that place’s threshold, together with the nowcast. So the level Yr shows for Alta is already a reading for Alta: you do not need to do the Kp arithmetic, and you do not need a storm.
Check dates for the campfire tour
What no forecast gives you is a probability for your night. Nobody publishes a reliable “chance of seeing the lights” for a given evening in Alta, and this site does not invent one. Yr’s activity is a forecast of the sky’s activity, not a promise of a display.
The aurora cameras
Yr’s aurora section for places around Alta lists recent images from aurora cameras in the region, with how far each one is and when it was taken; on 2 November 2026 its Alta - Bjørnfjellet page showed cameras at Masi, Rássegálvárri and Karasjok, 65 to 99 km away on Finnmarksvidda. A camera showing green over the plateau is the best live sign that it is worth leaving the town lights.

Going out on your own
You can watch without a tour. Yr’s help page puts it plainly: the best conditions are a dark, clear sky without clouds. With a car, you can leave the town’s lights along the valleys south of Alta; without one, the tours do the driving. Winter roads are the hard part: Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian road authority, closes stretches in storms and avalanche danger, and a snow avalanche closed the E6 at Langfjord in Alta on the evening of 25 February 2026 (NRK, 26 February 2026). Check the road authority’s traffic messages before a night drive.

How the tours use it
The tours read the same sky. Amazing Aurora’s guides track live weather and sky conditions and adjust the route on the night; Finnmark Adventure's bus follows the weather, clouds and forecasts; Alta Adventure’s choose the drive by the weather and the Kp value. None of them can promise the lights.
