Alta or Tromsø for the Northern Lights
Alta or Tromsø for the northern lights: the polar night in each, the fjord-and-plateau setting against the coastal city, the road between them, and how the tours differ.
Both towns sit under the aurora, and on any given night the clouds decide more than the town does. The real differences are the setting and the scale: Tromsø is the bigger city, on an island off the coast; Alta is a small town at the head of the Altafjord, with the Finnmarksvidda plateau behind it, which NordNorsk Reiseliv, the tourist board for Northern Norway, sells for its “dry inland climate”. They are 388 km apart by road. If you want a smaller town and a quieter night, Alta is the choice; if you want a city around your aurora nights, Tromsø.
The calendar above is Finnmark Adventure’s *Alta: The Northern Lights Bus – A warm and Local Experience*, from US$148 a person (checked November 2026): about three and a half hours in a heated bus with a local guide.

Is the sky clearer in Alta?
This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is that no published source gives cloud statistics that settle it. The tourist board’s claim is about climate, a drier one in Alta than on the outer coast, and the practical effect is room to move: from Alta the tours can head inland, up the valleys or along the fjord, wherever the cloud forecast opens. Neither town can promise a clear night (the forecast).

How the tours differ
Tromsø is the larger city, with more going on around the tours; northernlightstromsotour.com covers the tours from Tromsø in depth. In Alta the choice is small and local. Amazing Aurora’s campfire coach adds free photos, Alta Adventure’s small group lends warm suits and boots, Finnmark Adventure’s heated bus is the shortest night, and Æventyr’s snowmobile night goes up the old postal road to the edge of Finnmarksvidda. None of the Alta aurora listings here offered a free second night when read in checked November 2026.
Doing both
The two are 388 km apart by road, and in winter the E6 between them can close: on the evening of 25 February 2026 a snow avalanche closed it at Langfjord in Alta (NRK, 26 February 2026). If you want both, plan a flight or a full day on the road with a margin, not an evening transfer.
