Best Time for the Northern Lights in Alta

When to see the northern lights in Alta: the September to April season, the most active months, the polar night from 26 November to 16 January, and which tours run when.

Updated November 2026

Visit Norway gives the northern lights season in the north as September to April, when the sky is clear and dark, and names March and April, and September and October, as the months with the highest activity. In Alta the darkness goes further: the sun does not rise at all from 26 November 2026 to 16 January 2027, on the Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s sun data. Any month in that window can bring the lights; the clouds decide the night.

The polar night

Between 26 November 2026 and 16 January 2027 the sun stays below the horizon in Alta; the days bring a blue twilight around noon rather than daylight. For the aurora that means the dark hours are long, but the lights still need a clear sky. For you it means planning the day around the twilight and the night around the forecast (the forecast). In Tromsø the same no-sunrise window runs from 28 November to 14 January (Alta or Tromsø).

How many nights to plan
